I love G1 Transformers, and the art in this manga volume is fantastic. Let's face it, the Marvel Transformers comics of the '80s looked hideous, with characters never staying 'on model' and issues filled with inconsistent artwork that looked downright ugly more often than not. Not the case here, the characters look amazing on every panel with tons of detail.That said, the stories are very short and, subsequently, very weak. The dialogue reads like a fan translation, and the chapters are too brief to form any coherent plot line. I'd be curious to know where these stories originally came from (were they included with the '80s toys, Shonen Jump bonus chapters, etc...)?In the '80s cartoon, each of the Transformers had very defined personalities, but here, they're just cookie cutter robots with interchangeable dialogue. I've never seen villains utter the phrase "Curses!" so much outside of comics from the 1940s! Maybe IDW should have taken more liberties with the translation so the characters actually sound like their G1 counterparts. As I read through this, I kept imagining how I would have re-written the dialogue, and it *could* have been salvageable, at least to a point. Obviously, the stories here were written for very young kids, which is disappointing, as I'd have loved to see what this could have been like if aimed for an older demographic.That said, the presentation/format of this volume is great. The hardcover is nice, and the cover art is impressive. The real treasure here is the rare bonus art at the back of the book.In short, this book has great art, extremely weak stories, and a very cool 'bonus art' section. I appreciate that something somewhat rare was finally made available, but I doubt I'd buy a second volume unless the stories are considerably better. I feel that, for many who desire rare or out-of-print manga, '80s Transformers manga was *very* low on the want-list. Where's official English translations of the Godzilla movie tie-in manga from the '90s? And the biggest question of them all...when are we finally going to get reprinted volumes of The Guyver??? This is a very high quality reproduction of the original manga. The binding is sturdy. The images are sharp. The included art is beautiful. However, if you are an adult collector, the stories contained therein do not meaningfully contribute to the cartoon. The stories are aimed at very, very young Japanese children in the 80s--with each chapter ending in a power-rangers-esque finishing move. Volume 3 will be more important, because it contains Zone and Battlestars.
